View Full Version : Hatchback lifts?

I am looking for some hydrolic lifts like the ones on a hatchback car to lift the hatch up. But what are they called? I search for hydrolic lifts and I get some big machine things.

What I am looking for has to be small enough to fit inside a computer and lift open a side.

Thanks for any help.

Oh those are called hatch struts...you can find them at autozone or any auto shop. Usually like 25 bucks or so. Oh and i'll send ya an email tomorrow :)

Also known as Gas Springs.

You'll have a hard time finding a hatchback lift rated under 15-10 pds. You could easily bend your case panel trying to compress that lift. You could try finding a gas spring w/ bleeder valve. Then you can bleed off excess pressure to suit your application. Problem with that, bleed off too much pressure and theres no way to fill it again.

Instead of gas springs, I'd consider fabbing a hinged door support from the hardware realm like this (http://www.rockler.com/ecom7/findprod.cfm?sku=422&clk=412&gcid=C11135x009-1705&gtkw=Lift%20Up%20Door%20Support)

Awesome thanks! I was thinking the same thing about the strength and was trying to think of what other things had such lifts and what they used. The above link is perfect!

You could get something like that door lift and either modify it, or replicate it to your application. Definatley want it inside the case

Hey what about these?

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jhtml?id=0019043016104a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&QueryText=gas+springs&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jhtml.22&Go.x=16&Go.y=14&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=gas+springs&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jhtml

For cabinets and such on boats. That might work huh? Since a cabinet door is not too much heavier then a metal door?

Also check this out:
http://spdhardware.com/gs3.htm

It has a notch you turn for the applications weight. Does that mean I could just get one that is 20 PI and turn it down from there?

I remember the ones on boats being rated for pretty low loads, you might want to check that out also.

The marine style lifts don't list pds. Check into that..

The "stop and stay" spring is for propping or holding up object, not adjusting the pressure. These will still compress hard like automotive style lift.

I'm guessing a LL V1000 panel is 2-3pds max.. if even that!

Yeah even with a semi thick acrylic window I am installing its still not gonna weigh much at all. I am going to look into the marine ones and find out the weight. If that ends up being a dead end I will just go to the ones like mnpctech posted. Looks like a perfect back up.

Both the posted links to www.rockler.com have timed out and return validation errors instead of the correct page.

Door weight 5 - 10pds

Could mount a steel plate inside your panel to add ballast if neccessary.

Thats what I was thinking. I am installing a recessed handle on the side (like on the top of nexxos case) and behind it I can put some weight. When I get my worklog started I will for sure post updates and pics of how its working.
