ok well after playing some games earlyer tonight i left my room with my computer on and came back and it had turned off. i truned it back on and it got beary half way though post and shut off. started disecting it and booting with sertin parts out. and came down to the fact that eather my motherboard or proc is not working right. i reset my cmos i even inspected the error lites and they say nothing is wrong.

anyways give me ideas on how to fix it i have already started reading the warrantys (note nothing has been overclocked {as far as they know} and nothing was overclocked at the time of dead)

Its a process of elimination. Disconnect everything from the mobo except ram and video, check the psu starts ok, with a jumpstart if it won't off the pwr-on, liste dfor the bbep codes if you can find a pc speaker. Try one stick of ram at a time, swap in a spare video cartd etc, etc, etc....

Do you have a PCI video card?

zer0

no i dont this is the only video card i have.

i have the same issue whether the video card is installed or not.
same with memory all my drives and pci cards.

You say it gets half way throught the POST. How far? If its posting at all your mobo/CPU will be fine. Does the GFX card display anything?

yes it the video card displays everything all the way though post. i can now get it in to the bios but then a few seconds later it shuts down.

this means it gets past everything (including memory check). im strating to think the cpu is over heating ingageing the auto power off functions. but i dont have enough time to get in to that part of the bios

the heatsink is in good shape and i have wasted half a tube of as5 applying and reapplying it i have checked again and again and it is makeing contact with the core.

Im probably telling you how to suck grapes with this, but its worth saying. You are using a tiny ammount of AS5 arent you? This (http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) is the correct method.

Reset CMOS, if that dont help then what happens if you point a huge ass house fan into the case and switch it on.

no im not usine a small amount of as5 i have a nice thick layer of as5 across the whole serfice of the cpu.

i called a local pc shop and and willbe bringing my mother board in for diagnostic tomarow.

happy valintines everyone btw

no im not usine a small amount of as5 i have a nice thick layer of as5 across the whole serfice of the cpu.
http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/ph34r.gif Cardinal sin there i'm afraid. Will result in poor CPU|heatsink contact and thus poorer temps @ best.

As cheeb's link says, the idea of thermal compound is to fill microscopic gaps in the surface of the heatsink.

hum well again im useing plenty of as5 how ever i do think that might be the issue. i wonder if it might be that my heatsink bottem isnt level or something causing a gap after i stop pressing.

well i noticed the bottom cant be lapped as the higher than the spacers (wich cant be removed). would you guys recomend buying a new heatsink or can this one be saved my mom is just wanting it to work for me so anything i can do will help.

If its been the same heatsink that was working ok, dont change it at all, unless you feel like an upgrade. Its Very hard to get a good FLAT (not nessesarily shiney) surface hand lapping and you could easily make it worse.

Just reaply the as5 as the instructions explain (ie as thin a layer as you can manage) and see what happens. Did you try reseting CMOS etc?

It's worth noting that some mobo's require the CMOS to be reset several times before it takes effect - I have no idea why though.

thats a good point fillip. Some (thinking DFIs) need a special routine to ensure a successful clear. to be sure the best way is to uplug the machine switch the jumper accross and leave it for as long as you can bear (20 mins should be plenty)

my tends to be very quick when reseting the cmos (dfi board) all i have to do is move the jumper press the poswer button and move it back. (atleast thats what i do.) and it does make a noticeable reset. i will again try with the as5 this time useing less (as i was coating the enitre serfice with a thick layer)

(damn you guys i just talked my mom in to getting me a zalaman heatsink  )

anyways ill try it again im desperate playing games on my laptop it impissibul at best.

quick edit i used less as5 and now it bots and i can get in to the bios and look at the temp and it hovering around 62C wich is well about 10C hotter than it used to run.

also when the heatsink fell the second time (last night) the clip hlding the fan pon broke so i do need to buy a new heatsink.

i think i might not have applyed enough this time or i might have applyed it wrong. ill read over the instructions and order the new heatsink now thanks guys this is the farthest i have gotten. :D

I've got a DFI or 2 as well (Lan Party B ), when clearing the CMOS it's necessary to leave it in the clear position for 2 minutes+ to ensure a full clear. You shouldn't need to be pressing any power button, turn off the PSU at the wall or the back, move the jumper to clear, wait 2 mins, move the jumper back and power on. You should be carefull what your doing with it as BIOS death is quite common, this is the method used by most DFI owners/forum go-ers.

On anuther note I just build myself a DFI855/Dothan setup and it is the shiznat.

If you leave the machine in the BIOS for a couple of hours (on the hadware monitor screen) it'll max out the temperatures btw incase you didn't allready know.

oh well thanks for the precaution

once i get the new heatsink ill clear the bios and install the newest one from dfi.

it is the shiznat.
Is that good or bad?

Thats very good.

Still overclocking it atm, but I'm at 24k+ 3dmarks with a 6800GT... You've got to love that from something which consumes hardly any power and has no voltage adjustments whatsoever. I'm cooling the CPU (1.7GHz Dothan) with my AC northbridge cooler and the CPU is 2-3 degrees over ambient at 2.3GHz.

I'll post a roundup of some piccies and benchmarks if your interested once I'm done playing. Not going for any crazy speeds I need stability as it's got my RAID-5 setup in it, I see that the pci/agp locks may not be functioning correctly - especially at higher frequencies.

my Zalman CNPS7700-CU showed up today (i <3 newegg) and its bigger than i expected. honestly the images on the internet dont do it justice it is 2x as big as the stock intel heatsink so after i got it all installed i was stuck with the problem of how i would rout all my wires i did the best i could my case is only soo big. it fits very well though jsut a note to all you dfi lanparty ut 915p-t12 owners this sucker is big and you cant use your onboard sound if you want this heatsink (luckaly i got an audigy 2zs) anyways my computer works flawlessly now thanks for all the help everyone.
