View Full Version : HP-Resurrection II Evolution

Hi all :)
this is my second rebuild of a Old Retro Style HP Pavilion Tower.
the first one being HPResurrection, It @ the time was a big build up for me, and a testing ground to what was possible paint and mod wise.
http://mir.bitstripped.net/gallery/album03
I was so happy with the outcome i decided to build another and take it a few steps further.
I have since completed the case but have gone back to add watercooling to it to make it a more complete mod.
So HPRESII is now back in the modding stage and undergoing a evolution of sorts.
anyways piccys aways say it best :)
Cheers.
The victem, an old HP Pav P2-350 tower i fell in love with its smooth lines.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic178.jpg
First thing after the strip down was to vut the holes for the 3 120mm fans (wich later became 2 only) and to send the chassis away and have it chrome plated.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic211.jpg
Due to a lack of band width i had to resize a lot of the next piccys soz :)
First of the major modding was to graft in a 120mm Front Blow hole and fill in the floppy and seal up the fron panel.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic179.jpg
While the bondo settled next was to goto work installing the front evercool
and add some rubber sleaving to the holes egde.
Long 60mm screws were used to space the fan back to allow the blowhole tunnel to come thru the front of the chassis
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic180.jpg
Lighting!!!
Always was going to be a problem with alot of shiny surface inside the case,
i think i finally found the answer, using a display cabinet light! mainly cause it usues a pearlecent type glass to diffuse and soften the lighting ,
Inside has to be softly lit, not bright or glarey as to blast out past the LCD panel.
LCD Panel?? yes! as with the blow hole i always wanted to bang a lcd panel into the side of a pc!! but after pulling apart maybe 10 of the damm things :( ,ive never found the perfect one to use.
Untill today! finally found the LCD ive been looking for :P
It had to have a very thing bezel, and chromed too! a bonus , and have to have external power supply as not to make the unit too hevy and keep heat down inside the case.
The idea is that im going to mount this panel to a peice of clear perspex.
The perspex will over lap the LCD by about 2 cm allround. All the electronics for the LCD will be secured to the rear of the perspex.
Then the panel and perspex together, will be bolted to the window panel of the case.
So that you can still see into the case around the LCD.
Giving HP-ResII a side window and a LCD panel :P best of both worlds.
anyways will post some shots this week to make things more clear.
Cheers.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic181.jpg
First thing to do was to cut the new window hole, this one had to be larger with less rouded edges than HP1 so it would have more room around the LCD panel.
A jigsaw was used then a file to try and get the lines as streight as possible.
Then some 400 sandpaper to round and smooooooth the edjes off.
The back of the panel had to have a lot of work done as well, cutting and grinding all the support and strenghtening bits.
Next was to cut the perspex window out and fit it to just the right shape,
once done a few spot of hot glue as a temp holder for now and it was onto the LCD!!!!!!!
Prolly going to be my fav part of the whole project, ive had this mod in the back of the brain for prolly a yr+ now and im soooo glad to finally let it out!!!!! hehe.
The hardest part of this mod was finding a LCD that was just right for this type of mod,
Had this just been a simple LCD in the side panel mod then just about any old LCD screen would have done, but this was a LCD/window combo and needed somthing a lil different
The bonus was the button panel its going to work perfectly with the plan , as you guys will see.
The rest is all pretty self explanatory, the LCD is more or less soft presure wedged between 2 peices of perspex using rubber foam strips then locked tightened in using 4 screws on in each corner and chrome tube spacers.
Giving a suspended look!
anyways heres da pics.
Cheers.

I wanted HPr2 to have some sort of front panel and guage display but with the full rounded shape of the front i wasn't sure what i was going to do,the LCD display had been used in HP1 so i didn't want to use an old mod.I came up with what could be discribed as a counter-sunk guage setup,
Inspired by the sports dash in my old mazda :P
Anyways a new holesaw some plastic tubing some modders best freind (bondo) and i came up with this idea :)It's not permanant and i can always revert back to a full face, but i am pretty happy with the outcome.
cheers.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic185.jpg
finally finished the front panel, bondo'd the 2 peices back into one, sanded again and covered in highfiller.

Todays effort concentrats on mooding the boring old base stand into a fully functional mutilmedia unit http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
The idea is to take the original boring old base and give it a life!!!
To make hardcore mod while making it look as tho it was supposed to be there all along http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
The speakers that i'll be grafting in as well as the stock base below.
Next was to mark cut and shape the holes for the speakers, and to cut and shape the mesh to be used as the grills
Won't bore yas with talk and pics of cutting, dremeling and sanding!! but more the end results.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic187.jpg
As yas can see the orig base sat rather back and under the front of the case, kinda there but out of site.
As this will be another main feature of the project i've moved the base forward to make it see-able and fuctional to use.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic188.jpg
Now that the speaker grills are more or less set, next was to graft in a old usb/mike & speaker jack into the front.
A small bit of grinding had to be done to account for the round shape of the front ,Still leaving plenty of track for the unit to work.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic189.jpg
Next was to cut the holes, usual stuff here! drills, dremels, and filing.
The ruffness of the holes you see will be cleaned up with bondo and highfill
and in the final wetrub before paint.....of course as always it has to look absolutly factory original as if HP did it http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif
A preview, as you guys can see the base will now pretrude more forward and with the shape of the speaker grills should have a "Mean Mother" sort of look about it.

Had an idea to stealth the cdrom in HPresII , but not a conventional stealth , for this i would need to fabricate a remote eject button for the cdrom!
Thought that since this is a multimedia base! why not incorp in the base as well.
First was to find a the victem http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif an old 2X cdrom would be perfect..
I liked the shape of the Button itself and that it has the Eject arrow on it would be perfect for the mod.
Next was to unsolder the micro switch from the cdrom pcb! these are great lil switches, perfect ,reliable and very very small!(also very good momentary switches for atx on/off solutions)As circled i simply unsoldered the 4 tabs...
2 are the actual switch the other 2 are more anchors for the outer metal casing.
Once unsoldered and cleaned up, next was to attatch my own wiring that will run upto the DVD that will be installed
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic190.jpg
Next was to dremel a small rectangular hole for the button to come thru.
And secure it to the rear. using a small brace and glue setup.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic191.jpg
The 2 circled solder points are the switch in the DVD(this one being old crapper in case of a stuffup!)
But these are the points to solder the remote wire harness to.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic192.jpg
and WhaLaa! it works, a simple but yer effetive way to add remote eject.
Of course the end result and wiring will be a lot tidyer but this give you guys a idea of the mod.
Cheers

this was a bit of a side track!! for some reason i decided i didnt like the original base! so i have gone back and modded a second base.
In the end i stuck with the original base as the lighting looked better, but its nice to have a spare!
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic198.jpg
Bit more progress on the new base, went for a more! in-theme button too this time from an old HP-burner!!! http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif who would have guessed! hehehe
It was a bit harder to get the shape of the hole but i think it will be worth the effort, still to fit the usb and in/out jacks
Also played abit with some mesh grill and lighting.

Finished the CDrom(DVD) mod today!! i ended up ditching the chrome metal spacers for clear perspex, i think they suit the mod better and were a lot easier to file/sand into shape!!!
I had to do some custom hole work to the clear flexi cover, due to the curve shape it made the connecting screws want to go inwards!(pic #6) so a bit of micro routing was done http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif very carefully too i might add!!!!!!!
The end result was the screwing comming thru on a square angle.(streight)
Then used the newly shaped and sized clear plexy spacers and bolted thru the cdrom panel.
The holes in the cdrom panel are elonagted to allow adjustemt from the front when needed.
Lighting will be next.

today i wanted to get some more work done on the LCD mod, the idea was to make the whole assembly part of the side panel.
Meaning that the circut board, power inverter and wiring would all be monted to the back of the unit (inside the case)
For this i'd have to make a rear protection panel. and of course outa clear plexi http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Constructing the mod as a single unit will make it easier to work on the case , as it will simply be part of the side panel.
First up was to mark holes in the back panel
and mesure for the custom clear plexi spacers i was going to have to hand-make.
Once the spacers and my fingers were filed down to the right size , next was to cut /drill sand and buff what will become the back protection panel
Next was time to assemble the unit using the spacers, chrome screws and bolt thru all 3 sections.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic205.jpg
once the rear was assembled next was to then bolt the asseble to what will be the side plexi window.
This time Clear plexi screws are used. tightened to create a sandwich effect that locks the LCD panel between the 2 panels.
cheers

Fans/rads.
the orig idea was to have a blowhole fan thru the front of the case as well as having 2 x 120mm rads for the wc setup, one rad/fan was to have been mounted in the side of the case and the other as an exhaust in the rear of the case.
This all looked untidy in the mockup i did,
So! i decided to combine the front fan and rad! using push/pull system
all- in-one idea in the front.
to help minimise noise and have some sort of cowling i made 2 x custom plexy 10mm thick plates.
Aslo adding some LED lighting to help add effect.
i was very suprised at how well this worked!!! and as a bonus solved my front fan lighting as well

working on the front switch panel where the on/off and hdd and power led's are.
The orig setup was just the button and leds poking thru the bare metal, looked a bit crude.
so im dressing the back up with some pespex, then attactching some nice shiny RCA jacks and some clear tubing for the new wire to run thru to the side of the case, wich will have rubber gromets and also RCA jacks.
Then some more special lighting effects, to make the tubes pretty blue! http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif
Spacing is a bit out atm but can adjust them closer and even them up later.

I went to the pc markets the other day to buy another new psu for hp2, ive always liked the look of the black TT's with the nice big 120 fans!
But there were non! so i decided to just buy a generic 420w and mod it myself.
This would keep in tradition too with the rest of the build up.
There it is the boring old shitter with 80mm rear fan http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif
first thing was to crack it open remove the guts
Then cut the holes on the rear the side and for the mesh and a bottem hole for 120mm fan graft.
a qik fit up to see i was on track http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic239.jpg
Next was too choose a colour!
Not too hard ! boring old gloss black, mix some up, prep the gun and spray away.
As you can see in the pics, i chose to hot glue the mesh plates in.
A few slight mods and extra cuts to fit it all back in and out of the way of the larger fan.
Bolt it all up and sit it in for a test run and preview http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Not quiet as sexy as a genuineTT but im pretty happy with it http://www.casemodgod.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

A lot of work went into the bondo side of this mod and its time to put some effort into the rest of it.
First was to crack it open and find a suitable place on the PCB board to drill a
hole thru it to feed the wire thru.
Of course a hole also had to be drilled into the outer casing and a gromet fitted to finish the hole off.
Once done the new wire loom can be fed thru, covered in black tech flex and ends heat shrink covered to stop fraying.
This idea completly removes the wires from the back of the unit and feeds them down the bottem underside.
And will keep a clean appearence on the inside of the case.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic251.jpg
Now that the wires are taken care of the outercase can now have a custom plex outer cut to shape and fitted. This will not only conseal the old unused rear holes but help colour match the unit (as well as the CDROM) to the rest of the project.
Satin purple is used for obvious reasons
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~lukestclair/mypic252.jpg
Last is to re-attach the satin black cover to the chrome HDD-BAY pop in the screw consealers.
Last is to feed the new wireloom thru to the outer side where most of the wiring is consealed.
Again a wire gromet is used and a chrome RCA jack.
This part of the mod is done

Im going to run female plugs inside of HPRES2 that way i can add and remove lights as needed.

Defyant that is truly amazing work. I really like your innovative touches such as the moveable lighting. Your home made dual res is also a work of art.
Modding at its finest!

Have to be honest when I saw the start of this mod I wasnt that impressed.
It has however got better and better! The results so far are stunning!
The only complaint I have is that the lcd hides all the stunning work inside!!!! :D

That's how I felt, but last night I thought it was nice, but right now it's so much nicer. I love how you've disguised the power cables with hose and the end caps look like barbs. The interior lighting is really nice and neat, and great looking.

The brackets like the res's pretty much need to be completly fab'd
8mm plex for the base's and strips of .4mm black flex for the hold down straps.
The staps are just thin peices of flexible plastic .4 mill thick cut into strips

Dude! that's awesome! I love how you've integrated a little indentation for the reserviors! How bad was it to get them leak free?
And dude, differnet coolant color. Ring up pug or someone else around here and we'll hook you up with good, proper blue dye :)
