View Full Version : Little web page problem

Right, before I launch into the problem I must say I cant link to the site so you guys can test it for yourselves - This is due to the uni' blocking FTP so I can't upload it to its web space.
This may mean that this thread is pointless but i'll persist anyway.
I redesigned my personal webbie a month or so ago - just something really basic that's 100% XHTML and CSS comliant. Well, when testing it in Firefox the graphics are displayed fine if the page is open in a tabbed window. If however, it is the only tab open; i.e. just single Firefox window and no additional tabs, it can't align the graphics properly anf when I move over an omage that has a javascript swapimage function on it a thin grey line cuts through the graphic - imagine the sort of little distortions you get when you have two programs ontop of each other and you quickly tab between them but your comp doesn't keep up.
It's really bugging especially since it could just be some little quirk with Apache, but as previously mentioned I can't test it on a remote system while i'm stuck here http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/frown.gif
Any ideas folks?
(I.E. displays the actual graphic in question fine but has about 10 other issues even though everything has been checked over and over @ W3C.org)

well each browser is designed diffrently and i find not many are totaly wc3 compatabul including the all powerful firefox. one thing you might want to do is kinda mess around with how you display your images try useing html to aligh them rather than xhtml (as it is a rather new standard) i hope this helps.

Well' i've given up trying to solve the above problem until I've got a version up and running on the web. That way i'll know whether it's PHP or Apache causing the problem on my own comp.
Anyways, instead of creating another thread for this next problem i'll post it here.
I've just installed new versions of Apache(1.3.33) and PHP(5.0.3) along with the Zend Optimizer engine, but none of my previously functioning php pages will run. http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/rant.gif
PHP was installed using the binary installer for Win32 services as was Apache. I've played around with the httpd file and it doesn't seem to have made ant difference. PHP pages are simply displayed as code - almost as though there is no PHP interpreter installed.
Nothing in the error log is of use so i'll sort of at a loss as to what's wrong.
Any ideas?
[EDIT]
No matter! All sorted now.
I removed PHP and Apache completely and started over with Apache 2 and PHP 4.3.11. The two aren't initially compatible so there's some annoying php.ini and httpd editing to do first, plus there's a whole bunch of dll's that the binary install doesn't give you so you have to pinch 'em from the zip pack.

OK, with regard to the web page display problem, i've now got it up on the web, so point a newly opened, not tabbed, Firefox here - http://www.themodsquad.co.uk/mod-squad-logo2.php
NB: IE wont work properly, the only time I tried it there were some problems with the way it was interpreting the style sheet and since I don't use IE I havent been bothered to fix it yet.
If you move over one of the links in the logo @ the top of the screen you'll see a grey line cuts through the image, and that the main part of the logo (to the left) is offset where the logo overlaps the into the main box.
The strange thing is, this anomaly doesn't appear in a tabbed firefox window so I don't know if it's because the figures in the stylesjeet are based on a tabbed window (i.e. when I was testing i may have used a tabbed window) or if it's something else. http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/confused.gif

Dumb question that solves most webby code issues: have you run your stuff through the appropirate wc3 validator?

everything has been checked over and over @ W3C.org yeah.
I think i may have to just sit down and re-write the page from scratch to see where it's gone belly up. I did notice that if i change the position attribute in the stylesheet for the page logo to 'realtive' I don't get the same prioblem, but then I don't seem to be able to control the placement of the logo - gonna have to do some reading up. http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/frown.gif

You trying it in a single FF window? If it's a tabbed window it will work fine, but not when it is a single, untabbed browser. - Which is what is p***ing me off.

Hmmm, so it's gonna be one of those probelsm is it... http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/rant.gif
FT, when you run it in IE does the whole page displays as intended, in essence, everything is in proportion and doesn't look as though it's being displayed incorrectly?
My IE cramps all the page content into a <DIV> element towards the top of the screen. (It's just an outlined content box and is not represented in the browser by the figures, [percentages] in the stylesheet)
As for FF, i've tried everything I can think of so far and have emptying out the cache and temp files incase it was bringing up a stored page view but still get the grey line through the page links ina single browser view. I'm starting to get really confused by it now.

The layout is buggered in IE...(no grey line though  )
As for Ff what version ae you running? have you got any interesting extensions installed ?
Failing that are you sure someone hasn't drawn a line on your monitor with a grey marker:p

Yeah, no line in IE, never has been. Layout f&*$%d though not sure why yet - page is 100% xhtml and css compliant, guess thats IE for ya though.
Firefox version 1.0, i have some extensions installed and infact I did think it could be them last night but didn't have the energy to sit here and remove them then try again.
FlashGot, Web developer and Bandwidth tester are the plugins currently installed.

Yeah thanks for that man, I just removed all my extensions and guess what...
uh huh! http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/happy.gif
It's a little annoying, i'm guessing it was the Web Developer plugin that did it, maybe it's a little bug that'll be ironed out soon, do you know if you can report bugs to the FF crew?
Now for IE, this could take a while...

As far as i know this (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/) is the best place to investigate the bugs in FF. Might be that it's already been reported.
Good luck on theIE front i think you'll need it :h34r:

Dude I think it might be your machine's firefox..

That's pretty much the conclusion i've come to. I'll do a fresh install in a bit to see if that helps.
[EDIT] Ok, tried a fresh install and it made no difference so i'll have to live with it until such time as the entire hard drive is reformatted. In the mean time, aslong as it's ok for everyone else it doesn't really matter I guess

Not to launch a flame war or thread hi-jack but fire fox is not mature enough to be a fully fledged browser yet imo. I had to stop using it at work as despite setting limits on its cache etc it would fill up my profile space very quickly. Also a lot of the websites i go to dont display right and you can not connect to the secure payment pages of the majority of online retailers.
Before everyone jumps in with the IE isn't standards complaint and FF is line. Well tbh i dont care i want a browser that works and atm fire fox doesn't and its slower.

Well tbh i dont care i want a browser that works and atm fire fox doesn't and its slower.I must say i haven't had any of the problems you've just described(other than the odd page layout problem). I've been using FF @ home since 0.5 and i did have some of the probs you describe on the older versions. Since 1.0 i've been using @ work and @home with no issues on secure pages(even my online banking that wouldn't allow it till it got to 1.0).
It's certainly no slower for me but it does seem to behave less consistently from client to client i have had issues with extensions that install fine on my desktop but not my laptop:unsure: .
Still my browser of choice though:D

I still use it at home and the errors arent consistent. it works with my online banking no problems at all but wont connect to anything using world pay. It seems to be a bit buggy with flash too. Gamespot.com uses flash banners and on their pages the flash banners stutter and make the bottom half of my screen flash untill they have ran through animation once then it works ok.
The weirdest thing is with Outlook web access. It works way better in FF then IE. lol

That flash problem seems really odd - definately never seen that one before...I guess this is the issue: it dosen't seem to install in a consistent fashion. Sometimes I get it all working first time others I have to install it a couple of times to get it all up and running - still I can't live w/out tabbed browsing ( ) now so It's well worth the effort
