I "may" be able to pick up a 1974 (manufactured in december 74) one of these at a very very good price.
I have allways had a hankering for an American V8 (Personally I like the camaro SS of the late 60's) and this car is an origional right hand drive export only model which is a big plus as everythign is on the proper side as god intended.
I was never a huge mustang fan (excepting perhaps the cobra) so my knowledge of them is limited.
So basically I am asking you guys (particularly the americans among us) what they think of the car. The good, the bad, the ugly......
Also we got anyone from Devon on the forums ????

2nd gear burnouts mun! :h34r:
Check out these articles (http://www.mustangii.org/media/ads-n-articles/)
Mustang IIs have become very rare in the Midwest, Most were lost to corrosion. Cobra IIs are very collectible. I'd imagine that mach1 is very rare over there. I honestly don't remember what to watch out for on these.

Not bad shape @ all...
13" rims? ...
I recall MIIs having serious body lean in corners.
Body parts could be real tricky if she ever got bruised. I rarely see MIIs in Minnesota anymore.

I recall MIIs having serious body lean in corners.
Standard American cars of the 70's lean or serious lean ????
mnpctech

serious lean.
Even if those were 14s w/ decent tires, it will understeer (or plow) like a pig. You gotta a lot of weight in "da noise" der
If the guy doesn't ride along, just try taking a 90 degree fast, but god be careful! you'll see what I mean. Unless somebody really beefed the springs / shocks @ one time. Maybe even installed aftermarket front/rear sway bars.
If you buy it and reallly fall in luv wit it, and have the funds, invest in upgrading the suspnsion, you'll love it even more and it will actually feel like you can play with the import guys

Not my style of mustang, around here the ones that look like that are garbage piles, very slow, no corners allowed. Personly Id wait for a 1st gen, or get a chevy.
But if thats whats out there you can make um scream, not very many limitations when it comes to old fords and the like.

Just got outbid on the car (now outside my budget) but I dont know if the owner was pulling a fast one or not.
Once I confirmed I was out of the bidding he mentioned about calling me as he is unsure the other bidder has the money.

Ok the story gets better.
I had set a max price for the car of 2,300 and started bidding at 1,950. There was an auto bidder bidding against me so i stopped at 2300. This evening I uped my maximum bid of 2400 and the other bidder pulled out.
About an hour before the Auction ended the bidder came back and once again beat my offer. About 30 seconds later I received a mail from the seller to confirm my contact details which I did and also told him that I was not willing to go higher than my previous offer and thanked him for taking the time to answer my questions...
He followed up a few seconds later with.
thats ok...im waiting for reply from other bidder...dont know if its scam or not...if i dont here then i will retract their bids due to no return of email..the reserve is £2400 and i would accept that price
To which I replied that the other bidder had a number of good refferences and wished him luck.
exactly 2mins later I get.
yes but i have not recieved a reply and there are people who access others accounts and bid just to mess you up..mainly from foreign countries...have had it before with wheel sales and it has cost me a few sales...so now i contact any other bidders to make them aware and also confirm their bid/s...if you are new to this then thankfully you havent come across them but be aware...i will give another 10 mins for a reply then close there bids
a couple of minutes later I get confirmation from ebay that I am once again the highest bidder as some bids were cancelled..
And then I get.
have cancelled their bids..they have also bid on another item of mine...so it looks like ive got a problem with particular user!!!!!they seem to target people who do alot of trading..pricks!!
and then auction ends so i get
well done you got the car...still no contact from other bidder..and they never re bid....please contact me about deposit and collection as i will have to arrange something as im away from 4th-11th feb
followed by
if you need some time to sort things out please let me know as i would require a deposit asap..i might be able to arrange storage for an agreed time at someones garage..[£35 p/week] for a max of 2 weeks...please dont forget that the sale is a binding contract between us
emphasis mine......
I would have been happy to take it at 2400 if the auction had finished with no hassell but as it is I have bene bidding against myself sionce 1950
Despite his mail I know he cannot force me to pay 2400.
My plan is to call him tomorrwo and offer something in between and as part of the deal get him to meet me somewhere more convient instead of me having to go to his place.
What do you guys think......

30th January 2005, 22:57
So, if i'm reading this right and putting all presumed realities of the situation to one side, he expected the 'winning' bidder to reply to his email within 5 - 10 mins of the end of the auction (which he expects from all high bidders anyway) and if he hears nothing he offers it to the next highest bidder who he contacts anyway 'just in case'...
Was this an Ebay auction Kev' or some other site?
It definately sounds suspect to me, and as such you should maybe highlight the situation to the admin's of the site you're using so they can check it out for themselves.

Filip not quite right.
About 50mins before the end of the auction he contacted the 2 highest bidders. he gave us both 20 mins to reply and then cancelled the bids from teh person who didnt reply. In fairness I had no feedback and the other bidder had only 2 feedbacks.
Oh and filip congrats u post whore.... :D

How long has the 'other' bidder been registered for? Because if they've been registered for a while, bid on items regularly (you mentioned 2 of the sellers auctions were bid on by the same person) and still has zero feedback it definately seems weird.
And giving a bidder 20 mins to reply isn't very reasonable, question is if it's legit' why didn't the seller contact the the other bidder as soon as he'd made the first bid rather than wait till just before the end. Sounds fubar to me. Let da management string him up by the balls!

After many e-mails and phone calls I think the guy is genuine enough. A quick look at his feedback seems Ok and looking at his other auctions he is having some problems with tards.
I also did some more research on the car.
Its a 1975 Mach1 with the rallye package which according to the tech sites out there is probably the best handling and performing of the early mustang 2's.
The Mach 1 came with the larger engine, and a unique lower bodyside treatment with Mach 1 lettering. However, the Rallye package was required to give the Mach 1 the maximum performance potential. The package consisted of the Traction-Lok differential, CR70x13 wide oval radial B/WL tires, extra cooling package, digital quartz clock, the Competition Suspension(heavy-duty front and rear springs, rear stabilizer bar and adjustable shocks), outside color-keyed remote control mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel and styled steel wheels/trim rings.
From what is currently on the car (ie digital clock, Traction-Lok differential, and the wheels) it appears to have the package. It also appears that the wheels are worth quite a bit almost 25% of the car.
All going well I will be having the car picked up next week an delivered to Swansea ferry terminal where the ferry company will load it and bring it to Ireland.
Unless pug wants to drive it over for me :D

2,400 Euro....Isent that like $4000+ American? That car aint worth half that IMO, my advice is to wait while continuing to save money for a better car. And it also sounds allitle fishy, he must REALLY want to sell this car.
Knipex
1st February 2005, 21:39
Hate to tell you but that 2400 Sterling about $4500 and over here its worth at least twice that....
Remember in Ireland a VW Passat new is about €33,000 or $43000.
American cars particularly clasics are worth way more here as they are much much more scarce.... They are cheap in the states because they are a dime a dozen but over here its one of only 2 int he entire UK and Ireland and the only V8, the only right hand drive (as god intended).
Plus according to this (http://www.mustangii.com/price_guide.asp) its actually worth between $3 and $5k
You are right though a mustang 1 or the cammaro are worth much much more but outide my budget.
A reasonable condition 69 mustang went for 28,000 euro here last year.

After much much consideration rading your posts and getting some advice from my local classic car club (and a quick chat with my friendly local body shop)
I am fairly confident I can turn a few quid on the car. The plan is to bring her into Ireland, tidy her up (where needed) bring her ato a few shows and sell it.
Knowing me I would be bored with it in 6 months anyway (once I have finished all the work) I am very confident I can sell it at a nie profit if I can get her up to show standard and I have the vontact to do that on the cheap (assuming its not a complete POS)
So I have paid my money and am about to take my chances. Still looking for a good value mark 1 or camaro though :D

Body is like new (paint faded slightly but its 30 years old) one stone chip wiith the start of surface rust.
Sludge box works surprising well.
engine is sweet.
tracking out slightly.
interior is 99% mint. (one tiny tiny tear on back of rear seat.)
Upgraded suspension aint as bad as I expected. No sports car but not bad.

Very cool.
Knipex
17th February 2005, 11:05
I had her up on a lift this morning.
Underside, floors etc are surprisingly good. very clean.
However I did find some badly done body work on the lower part of the front left hand wing and rear right hand quarter where there was some light surface rust that was just brushed off and painted over.
Nothing major and no panels will be required. There was a repair done to the rear left quarter a few years back and workmanship was not the best so the boot door isnt aligning 100% but again easily repairable.
Saturday I strip her down and start sanding in prep for a tidy up and respray.

If I was keeping her then probably yes.
As the plan is to sell it on I will be keeping her as close to origional as possible. Two reasons
An origional car is worth more.
If I keep the origional color I wont have to respray the interior so it keeps costs down.:D
So red it is.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH This is driving me nuts and its my own fault.
The origional plan was quick tidy up respray and sell it towards the middle of summer while turning a nice little profit.
First I decided I didnt really like the sahe of red it was origionally and the painter convinced me that chaging it to a nicer red wouldnt be a huge problem and any way the color code on the door plate just says red.
Then I fond myself stripping out the interior as it would kill me knowing it was a different color under the carpet and roof lining.
I spent hours last night tracking down replica's of all the origional decals that were under the hood and on the doors in the back etc....
I just now got a quote to get all the shiny bits rechromed. There is nothing wrong with the existing chrome bits just the odd scrape and some slight pitting in places where you cant even see it unless you specificaly look for it.
I even got a quote to rechrome the light switch for gods sake....
I need to keep reminding myself that the idea is to make a profit... I am not keeping this car........
Interior has not been removed but I am pulling back the carpet a bit so I can blow in the new color.
The Chrome work will be polished up and reused not rechromed.
The decals are too late as I have them ordered.
I am not rechroming the origional wheels. if I cannot polish them to a reasonable level I will paint the bloody things......
I will order a new cargo mat and taillight as the exisitng ones are bad and are obvious.
That is it. No more shopping for parts.....
Must resist............

Just back after a long long day of rubbing down.
I have cut out the two pieces of rot for replacement. (one didnt really need to be cut out but I decided I might as well.)
All the lower part was stripped to bare metal and any surface rust (of which there was amazingly little) removed and treated. (mainly lower part of rear quarter panels in front of the wheel arch)
A previous owner a bang just over the wheel arch on the right hand rear quarter panel and some twat decided that instead of repairing the dent he would just fill it with body fillers. I took of the chrome trim and started sanding when a big lump of fillers fell out. So I had to remove all that and press out the dent. (pressing out the dent took all of 5 mins and a tiny amount of fillers to finish it off. For some reason he also went at the join behind the door (he didnt fit a new panel and there is no join seam anywhere else  ) maybe he thaught about replacing it I dont know but he brazed it in a few spots (and did it badly) I ground down the braze and it will be rewelded properly.
That was no too bad but he used some crappy enamel paint to spray it and blew out the entire side of the car. The color match was perfect but the paint was a bitch to rub down. It kept clogging the paper and and ribbing. Took 20 sheets of 240 gritt and 4 hours to run down to the origional primer.
Outside of that all went well. I have sourced the cargo carpet, taillight and a perect dash bezel on the cheap (my dash bezel is slightly worn) and they sould arrive inteh next few days. The underbody has now been treated (am sorry it took of the old treatment as it was damn near perfect and there was no rust underneath)
Oh and the tow bar was removed (who the Fu&k puts a tow bar on a Mustang) apparently it was put on my the last owner to protect the rear bumper.
The body shop will be doing the few panel repairs and then I go back and wetsand it prior to priming. (doing me a favour so I may not have to for a week or 2 but to be honest I dont have the time at the moment anyway)
She will be completely restored and rust free and origional when I sell it. Only the R/H drive conversion, the replacement of the single pipe exhause with a true twin pipe unit and the fitting of the Holly carb and Edelbrock manifold (which Ford should have done the first day) will be changed from when so left the factory.
On the plus side apparently the prices on the II have gone through the roof. )they are getting rare) Last month a 1978 Mustang II coupe went for $13K... And lets face it the coupe is alot uglier than the Mach1 :D . So I should make a tidy little profit (despite me once again going overboard with the work)
Edit I forgot my camera so o pics I am afraid. :(

Well she is finaly ready for priming. All the plates were fitted last night and today. All body repairs are now complete (including one disaster caused by me not paying attention when using a portable lift  )
While I was waiting for the body shop to get some free time to do the plating I decided to borrow their lift and so some mechanical work. The right hand front caliper was stuck open (so car pulled HARD to right on braking). I removed the caliper and took out the piston to discover that the cylinder was full of gunk and grit and the brake fluid was ....... well it was wet and thats about he best thing that can be said for it. The fluid had been changed 2 years ago (according to the service history and MOT certificates) but the fluid must never have been changed before that. I now have the front brakes sorted but but need to get a set of seals for the back brakes before starting them.
The engine bay has been detailed and I need to paint around the battery compartment (acid leak at some stage) and need to do a job on the exhaust (lots of patches been done and its leaking) so I have to get that sorted. I was about to order a set of of bushings for the suspension but the existing ones are OK and I have to draw a line somewhere so good enough is good enough.
I have primed the inside of the bonnet (hood) and boot door (trunk) and I must say I like this primer. I was not too worried about the finish as I will be fitting a new pad under the bonnet so I only used 120 gritt paper to strip it down, but after priming the surface was perfect with no marks. This stuff is brilliant I dont even need to use putty to fill small blemishes as the primer will easily fill them. Plus its black after spraying and goes a dark grey after flattening so its very easy to see what you have missed. Looks like I wasted my time wetsanding it all down with 800 gritt. I love this stuff  .
Car should be primed during the week but I am away untill Thursday night so I wont be able to prep it for final painting untill next weekend. I had hoped to have it ready for Easter Sunday (there is a huge classic car show on) but that aint going to happen now.

Knipex
19th March 2005, 22:26
Getting it for him is easy but shipping it will be a bitch.
Its highbuild primer surfacer (sometimes called primer \ filler) 2 pack primer by DeBeers. The black primer is great with dark colours as you dont need as many coats to cover it.
Once its applied dry sand it with 240 grit and then wetsand with 800 grit. I only got it because Martin who owns the bodyshop swears by the stuff. He saw me wetsanding for priming and just smiled (the Ba^%ard). It was his idea just to leave the underside of the bonnet at 120 gritt fiinsh for priming. Three coats and everything was covered.
Paint is DeBeers and I will get part numbers next weekend.

Top tip from last week.
When using a rag soaked with panel wipe to clean panels prior to painting do not mix it up with the rag you used to wipe up brake fluid.:o)
Starbuck3733T
27th March 2005, 21:11
IIRC brake fluid does bad things to paint.
Knipex
29th March 2005, 19:04
Well interior is now painted. (after a third attemt to get a color match)
rubbed down the outside (again)
Masked it up.
Wiped it all down with panel wipe.
Mixed the paint and filled the gun.
Martin (body shop guy god bless him) and the spray booth went bang.
Bearings on the main shaft for the hot air delivery fan died and snapped the key on the pully but still managed to damage the main fan. Booth is out of action untill the new parts arrive
So now I will have to run down the car AGAIN prior to painting and this puts me back at least a week. Plus room is running tight in the body shop so my car is now left outside during the day so I cannot reassemble the interior (no windows so rain = bad).
In fairness it was either mine, a mint 1969 Fiat Dino coupe  in for simor work, a stripped 3ltr V6 capri (still with full interior but no windows) or martins own Mini Molk which he has restored from a lump of rust to a pristine example of properly and sympathetically done restoration which is 99% finished.

Bit of that line went missing
Lets fix that.
Martin (body shop guy god bless him) suited up to paint the car and the spray booth went bang.
My luck has not actually been that bad to tell the truth. I made a few stupid mistakes.
Brake fluid soaked rag (sorted that pretty fast as I spotted my mistake and washed the panel down before serious damage was done)
Scrape on the side from hitting it with mobile left (another coat of primer in the area sorted that out.
And thats it really. The spray booth was one of those things  I feel sorry for Martin as he cannot paint anythign untill its sorted. He might get away with priming but thats it. So no car will go out this week.
Considering that I bought the car sight unseen from e-bay and got it shipped to Ireland I was very lucky with the way it turned out. The car needed very little work to make it mint, its very solid and I got it for a good price.
I am really pissed I will get no in progress pics and will have to settle for before and after but thats life.

Finally the pics.
Some pics from when I started putting it back together.

http://www.phyrric.com/pics/mustang/side.JPG
http://www.phyrric.com/pics/mustang/trunk.JPG
For some reason after I resized the pic of the boot the paint looks distorted but its not.
Since these were taken the back panel was rubbed down and painted a matt black.
The lower section of the car was painted the same mat black as per origonal.
Entire car was wet sanded with 1500, 2000 and then 4000 abralon and then buffed down with 2 grades of compound for that mirror finish.
All that neds to be done now is one more buffing with t-cut (amonia in the t-cut really cleans the paint to take out any final smears and swirls), waxing and to fit the side mirrors and bumpers.

Ooooh, are the mirrors chrome?
That'll look tasty when 100%, though i'd prefer it with wider tyres.

Agree with fillip, wider wheels/tires would give it more visual "muscle"

Thanks guys.
Believe me it looks much better now the black is done and the chrome is back on.
I would love to chrome the mirrors but the only guy in Ireland who does this kind of chromine has a 6 month waiting list and the quote to do it in the Uk is very very expencive and then I have to add shipping there is no way i will make the cost back when I sell the car.
Wide wheels and tyres would be great but again not in the budget but I do plan on painting or powdercoating the exisitng ones.
Black on the inner hub and silver on the outside. Similar to the wheels on a 911.

Wow thats a nice muscle car. Personaly I would paint it flat black and put some super wide chrome weels with street legal slicks and a supercharger on that motor and scare a fiew people with exotics sh!tless and also dont forget the strait pipes coming from the sides.
But I know your doing something to sell so thats not going to get you the most cash. Awsome car btw.

She is home.
Been test driving it all weekend and working out the final wrinkles... €100 in petrol allready (and petrol is cheap here in comparison to UK). I get the 4 wheel alingment checked and she now corners much better (still not european standards but not bad)
Few minor details, most now sorted and some twat broke my drivers side wing mirror while it was parked:rant: . I allready have an interested buyer.
Pics tomorrow.

In fairness to the guy it was a genuine accident and he hung around untill I came back to tell me face to face.
I was going to screw him to the wall for the cost but seeing as he was so genuine and was trying to handle a heavily pregnant wife and 2 young kids (loading them into his car when he banged off the mirror) I felt sorry for the guy and let him off (could be me in a few years).
To be completely honest the mirror was repaired before and I had thought abount doing a better job of it but decided to leave it alone. Went messing with it this morning to do a temporary fix untill I get time to do it right when I broke the mirror glass. It wont cost much to fix it (probably nothing except a couple of bucks for some mirror glass which I can get cut) but will take a few hours to do do right.
Just bought batteries so willt ake pics when I get home.

Result....
Car is now sold. (well deposit taken). New owner will collect the car at the end of the month.
Bought by a nice americn lady who moved to Ireland 8 years ago and has not driven since.
Will be used as a daily driver to take her 3 kids to school and do the shopping....
Main point is I soldit and actually made a few quid. Cash should arrive just in time to furnish the house.

Yes I have, not only seen the price of fuel but also lived it. I tend to forget I supose. But even when we lived in europe we had a 3L diesel motor so it was still decently large displacement. That thing neded something to the tune of 15L-18L per 100k and was a guzler. I think it was some sort of mercedes motor from the early 80's Was a v6 if I remember correctly. The motor was swaped in for a smaller gasoline 2.2L I belive. It was a d320 or something of the sort. Well i was never fond of the diesel rattle and prefer gasoline motors. But yes I know what you mean.
Well done mate. :thumb:

Damn %^&&*^%$^&*((&*^%
Yhey had asked me not to lodge the deposit cheque for a week so I had thrown it into a drawer. I only thought of it last week adn lodged it to my account. They weresupposed to arrive Friday week to collect it.
Bank ring me today to tell me it bounced.
I ring the buyer who casually informs me that their house sale had fallen through so they had no money for the car.:eek: WTF.....
As I had a deal done with these people I had taken to car off the market, turned down 2 offers and stopped bringing it to shows (I had even stopped driving it in case I marked it). The season is now almost over no more serious shows... I have turned down two good offers who now have bought other cars bought and Im stuck with the car.
I have the house bought (and hopefully signing contracts in 2 weeks) and just forked out on a new 50" TV based on having the car sold and the B*&^% bails out...
Looks like I am going to be living in an empty house, no furniture except for the damn TV and a sleeping bag... Lucky I kept the remainder of the house deposit and enough for the fees in my savings account.

Dont know how you do it but you allways get me to smile....
I am making a few calls today so see what I can salvage from this. If I could affoard to hang on to the car for another couple of months I know I would get my asking but time is getting tight...
I have checked with all the local clubs and there are only 2 decent shows left this year and none of them are really for American stuff and shows were the main method I was using to sell the car. I am currently calling back all the guys who expressed an interest but the 2 guys who made serious offers are out as they have bought other cars....
