The bottom inch you have cut off... are you putting mesh there? or are you instaling a device of some sort down there? or will I just need to keep guessing till you reveal a further along version. :P

Yea, silver w/ red tribal... The theme is now Black and Mopar Green

I cut out the tiny air holes. Bottom is still intact. Yea, mesh it!

Yea, I wanted it to be curvy and organic, not flat. I like the weirdness of it. Hes gone mad or psychotic with his mods :D

Inwin A500 was designed for the PSU to mount vertically (on side) Because of this, theres very limited space for larger Heatsinks. So I've made a horizontal PSU shelf above the MB. This of course, presents another hurdle. Fabbing a new cover. I've never liked the one piece case cover anyways :D

note: don't get used to the green paint.

I thought it was powder-coated too.

Is this the same case or a MkII?

Lovin it all the same. I wish I'd thought of that PSU casing mod - I really need some serious ventage above the PSU in Hex.

Looking at the available vertical space, it looks like you're going to need to use a 1U power supply.

Yeah, I was initially thinking "you haven't left enough room for a standard atx psu..."

I s'pose that's fine aslong as you don't intedn on having it packed to the rafters with modern components.

Starbuck3733T

You can get very beefy 1U PSUs. I've got some 1U dell PSUs that are ~500W.

Really http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/blink.gif, I thought they only got up to around 350W top end. Mind you, how much did the 500W set you back?

^ indeed, but not with a 120mm cooling fan on the bottom :p

Why can't the standard ATX PSU protrude from the case? ;)

These are only mock up photos. I've got other ideas I wanna try.. So the
this black PSU and green acrylic may not materialize

I've also decided not the use the bezel.. Bare naked with no bezel

He's a new yorker, not a texan. So, I'd suspect he could eat even more pizza and "longuyisland" ice tea.

I'm working on the same case, I'm really interested in what you do with this one. Wish I had those dremel skills though as I am trying to cut weight on this case for LAN transport and the large left side of the frame (when you are facing the case) on which you have the design cut is killing me. Can't decide how to cut it. Also, I cut the 120mm fan whole too high by accident and now I have clearance issues with the lowest hard drive mount.\

I agree that the 3 side panel is annoying. I'm really looking forward what you do with that and the bezel.

Hey, welcome to WizD.

I'm with you - I have an old case with a U-shaped cover which I was thinking of hacking up for a piano hinge but I'm gonna watch what Bill does first.

Hey! Thanks for the welcome I didn't realize it was my first post since I"ve been looking around this forum for a while!

As far as the case, its a tricky one. Its small but yet holds a full size ATX case but on the other hand it has that annoying drive cage that sretches across the whole side of the case. I have no idea how you would go about fabricating a new side panel and attaching it, that usually would involve some precision machining to look good.

Gull wing doors! That would look cool, especially if you put in on of those piston things, i dont know what they are called, that they use for the boot of you car to keep it open.

Actuators? I've seen someone do this with one side of their case before but not both.

Da_Rude_Baboon
16th February 2005, 14:13
that could be it fillip, a linear actuator. I wasn't sure if an actuator was the powered equivalent though.

fillip
16th February 2005, 14:28
You can get passive and active linear actuators - I think http://wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/confused.gif. The passive kind are similiar to those you get on a car boot, (a kinda gas hydraulic system I s'pose, not disimiliar to those found on office chairs??) and the active ones 'fire' when an electrical charge hits them - like a piston as you said before. I considered using some small ones in a project once but for heavier load jobs the prices started to get a little too high for my liking.

Agree on all counts. Was planning on using a pair to open and close my cube but prices went crazy.

Linear actuators don't fire like a piston - you're thinking of solenoids. LAs move in a smooth fashion.

Problem is what with uni' and uni' debt I haven't been able to afford to do anything. What's more, last summer I was working everyday of the week all summer long so time was a constraint too.

[/Thread Hijack]

Back to topic, Do you have any specific plans for the bare front of the case Bill? Or will you just carry the tribal cut-out theme through there too?

douphus
16th February 2005, 18:10
I think the problem with manufacturing front bezels without precision equipment is having a suitable attachment point. You can always bolt on a plexi front bezel but thats a pain then to remove quickly. I've always wanted to do one of those on my compucase 619 (D800) after I had it powdercoated but it didn't work out. Check out the following piece which many of you may have already seen, its a classic mod.

Also, I would be interested to see (instead of gullwing doors powered by hydraulics - too complicated) a panel that slides back and forth on wheels, sort of like a sliding glass door. Easy to remove and if you need emergency cooling (say in the summer heat waves), you can slide the doors back, put it in front of a house fan and presto!...you have extreme air cooling! Awesome. The problem with this of course is to be able to attach some sort of sliding rail system without it looking bulky and weird.

fillip
16th February 2005, 18:19
I believe Mashie just did that on his 'Doom 3: hell inside' mod.

A passive linear acutator doesnt need any electronics or compressors or anything. Its basically a dampened piston that opens and closes with a smooth action. Think of how your car boot/trunk opens.

Oh, I see. Still the size of this particular case is pretty small for that. By the way, I've decided to take mine apart and use some aluminum bars to support the frame and build a new drive cage...though still haven't figured out how yet or how to attach the bars. It should be a much cleaner frame though, it will only hold one hard drive and one cd/dvd...more of a media center than anything. Any links to making new drive cages or mounting drives or stuff like that would be appreciated.
