"The world has achieved brilliance without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants."
-General Omar Bradley, United States Army
In 1939, world renowned scientist Albert Einstein, wrote a letter to President Roosevelt, warning americans of a possible threat involving large scale bombs made from uranium. Because of this the Manhattan Project was born, and the atomic bomb put in the forefront of US government research.
In 1948 a US subcontracted secret corporation, wavEData, developed a top secret computer for the use of nuclear simulations. As a continuation of the Manhattan Project, this computer would be the most incredible for decades to come. Long hidden from public view, these machines were state of the art, using technology not seen anywhere before. These models were called FRAMEstor, and 124 prototypes were developed by wavEData.
Extensive research continued until the end of the cold war in the late 1980's. Secretly all the machines were dismantled and destroyed as nuclear research dwindled. But recently we have discovered pictures of what could be the last working FRAMEstor prototype, Node 23. We are investigating the source of these photos, but present them to you for further evaluation:

I love it scopEDog. The rear Cooling config caught my eye right away. Reminds me of our Airforce Jetplane that can do stationary takeoffs and landing. Help me out guys!

scopEdog, whats the CAD software youre using?
Is it easy to learn w/o instruction?
I'd like to try it out.
scopEDog
11th February 2004, 16:04
Wow that was quick..thanks for the reply guys! I think this is going to be a pretty fun build, the rear part of the case will be hinged and 2 linear actuators will open it at an angle (8 inches, about 45 degrees). Remote control, external power supply, and some other goodies are planned :)
I've been using sketchup for most of my designs including this one. Its very easy to use and produces great results (just ask dutchcedar...he'll tell you). Bill send me an email...i will *cough* help you out :)

Are you making a feature of the hoses from those rads - just seems like if you turned them round up the connections could be more stealthed into that connecting plate
Excited to see how it turns out! ^_^

Every time i look at this thread i end up spending about 10 minutes just gazing at the renders. :D
I hope everything goes as planned for you scopEdog as its an amazing looking project and is a great example of how (literally) thinking outside of the box can produce stunning designs. B)
Please keep us updated with this one and its certainly a project that will put wizd forums on the map!

Now I realise what the pneumatics thread (http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=46&view=getnewpost) was for.
<Quake3>Impressive!</quake3>
Can't wait for this baby! B)
[Edit] It just dawned on me what the corner pillars are for... stacking multiple units. :h34r:
mrplow
12th February 2004, 14:09
Would be a bit of a weird stacking arrangement... if they were half height I could see it working, with the columns stepped half height apart from one another...
Pug
12th February 2004, 14:13
I thought they were half height - I'm imagining a staggered stack, ie. left pillars go on the right pillars of the case below and so on, y'know?
mnpctech
12th February 2004, 14:16
He would just need to make 4, extension pieces for the pillars. maybe 1.5 ft?
:D

12th February 2004, 14:19
I hear ya Pug...
This is all sounding very Sci-Fi.
I can see scopEdog in his white lab coat with an evil "I will control the WORLD!" laugh
Pug
12th February 2004, 14:33
Hmm, yeah. Come to think of it, if he's going for world domination, mebbe they're actually gonna stack front left -> rear right and so on.  :o
Something to contend with the shuttle cluster (http://space-simulator.lanl.gov/) going on here Ed? ;) :D
Starbuck3733T
12th February 2004, 15:03
My mouth still hasn't closed from the last time I saw this... but still... very curious as to what the white pillars are in the corners?
Da_Rude_Baboon
12th February 2004, 16:40
Yeah i was wondering if they are weighted to aid the stability of the case? The hard drives all look to be in a stack at one side and with no PSU and the radiator placement i would imagine its quite top heavy.
Or they might be the power, reset, cd eject, buttons etc.
scopEDog
12th February 2004, 17:26
Heh...its funny that you should mention that. Orginally I had the pillars extended to the size of the case to make it sort of stackable (since i mentioned in my story that 124 of them were made...no worries though i will only make one :)). But it had a dorky look to it so i shrank it down. The idea is to put a USB hub (2 port) in the top of each pillar (and maybe firewire, other connectors...any suggestions?). This project is all about storage..so using multiple HDD and usb drives is a must. Even though its not in the drawing, a part of the pillars will be lit.
...if i take over the world i invite all my fellow wizd'ers my commanding generals :)

The slanted HDD's hangin' on the linear accelerators... brilliant.
The dual radiators with dual fans... friggin' mondo cool.

How many connections? something like a caravan/trailer board connector?

ooo come on! :D
scopEDog
15th December 2005, 04:10
And here we gooooooo...
THE PROBLEM:
I had in mind to use 2 autoloc linear actuators to open up the case. You can see it in my original sketchup drawing(behind the red plexi):
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/fscase.jpg
And here they are:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1556.jpg
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1560.jpg
*Yeah yeah yeah voiding warranty blah blah*
Now that I have them, how do i mount them? Good question..
THE SOLUTION:
Good ole' 3/8" thick aluminum to the rescue:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1542.jpg
I had these cut out to make a pivot for the actuators mounting holes. In turn it will bolt to the bottom of the case. I countersunk the mounting holes so the socket screws would sit flush:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1565.jpg
Used 5/16" thick round aluminum stock for the "axle" of the pivot(slides in perfectly in the mounting holes on the actuator). Carefully cut to size and drilled/tapped out the center:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1573.jpg
You can see one of the axles to the far right. Also had white plastic washers, used my trusty dremel to make the center hole bigger. Now to assemble it all together to see how it works out:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1567.jpg
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1572.jpg
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1575.jpg
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1580.jpg
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p2/cimg1582.jpg
Just need to drill out mounting holes on the bottom and I can do a test fit in the case. It pivots very smoothly and should work nicely.
Tons more to do, stay tuned..

I'm gonna push to get it mounted in the case and try for a test run this weekend. The actuators extend 8" so it will open the case approx. 45 degrees. At least by my calculations, so yeah thats probably wrong ^_^

Got some work done this weekend, drilled and threaded the triangle posts:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p3/cimg1587.jpg
Also was able to mount them to the bottom of the case:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p3/cimg1588.jpg
After dutchcedar showed me the light on how strong these actuators are I redid the pivot and extended the shaft to sit on the triangle posts, which made it very strong:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p3/cimg1592.jpg
They pivot better now and are very solid:
http://www.scopeworks.org/images/framestor/p3/cimg1591.jpg
So i couldn't resist seeing it in place with the rest of the case:

pdh, i put a mirror up Here (http://www.cheebs.co.uk/images/video/fsn23_vu2.avi) if that helps at all :thumb:

Thanks for posting a copy Chris :thumb:. I just downloaded the entire video here at work and went through without a hitch (file plays fine). Maybe it was just the time of day pdh?
@Kev..The video was done with DivX 6.0, just get this one and the video/audio should work fine.
@Phil..Took the video from my camera and imported it into movie maker(i took the free route :-)). Then i added effects and general edits. Created the movie in .wmv. Took that in Dr. DivX and converted it into a DivX .avi. Works out pretty well. Do you guys prefer it in a different format? DivX keeps it nice and small (and fairly good quality) so thats why i usually stick with that.
How do you guys like my little video experiment? Just curious really, but what would you guys like to see more/less of? Is it informative? More detail? Longer/shorter segments? I try and keep it fairly small but wouldn't mind making it a bit bigger if it has more quality content. But not too much bigger cause i just splurged through 3gigs of bandwidth in 2 days :-)

I would hope that most people that come to sites like this would be savvy enough to know about codecs etc. - Maybe we should have a guide to codecs etc somewhere, if i get time ill draft one and let warpoc (the vid master) disect it and tear it to pieces

I really like it on the whole. I do think it will lead to less thread comments though sometimes. I clicked on the link and moved on to other threads.. i actually watched the video more than an hour after it finished coming, i wasnt on here at the time so i didnt post a reply then it slipped my mind. Maybe shorter segments would help with that (the d/l will still be fresh in your mind) and also add more opertunities for asking questions as there isnt so much information in each one. I want to know WTF the "pillow attachment" looks like, but i forgot to ask after being in awe again over the case opening

I totally agree with you, downloading a video doesn't have the "instant satisfaction" that pictures have. I was hoping that single picture would get people curious enough to check the video out. Less thread comments too, so i thought it was good to add a mystery item at the end ^_^

Well the pins are good for 18awg, cable length is worrying me a bit though. Should be ok but I need to get a very high quality power supply, which i am researching now. Would love to hear any suggestions my fellow wizards might have on the subject ^_^
The next video will have a better shot of the connectors and pins. I'll also show the crimper i got. In the meanwhile here is where i got them:
http://www.action-electronics.com/ampcpc.htm
But from first glance these connectors are great, they twist and lock in. Very durable, the industry uses them for power so it should be perfect for this project.

Im a bit lost here. BUt I am assuming that your going to run a relayed psu to power the case servos. And one psu for the system.
Personaly I would look at the same psu's used by tech coolers for the last 4-5years. Meanwell psu's seem to be very tough and very good quality. Im shure you could run some regulators to ensure voltage reliability.
Good work eddie. Looking forward to the next steps.:toast:

Bingo, thats pretty much it. PSU for the PC and dedicated power supply for the actuators (I have an old 300w psu i never used), both housed in an enclosure. I'll explain a bit more about that later on, had to sacrifice some old equipment in the name of modding ^_^

Quick question regarding the PSU connectors. Have you got any kind of 'fail safe' in place, to stop you plugging the wrong set of external cables into the sockets on the PSU case?
Looking at the pin positions for the two sockets you've got wired up thus far, they seem to be the same configuration.
Also, do you plan on breaking open those remote key fobs for the actuators and putting the electronics into something else a little more fitting with the whole project??

Good questions fillip, I was considering a way to "key" the connectors so that they only plug into a certain spot. Maybe just do color coding, should be enough i think. But even if its not, I definitely know what connects where :-)
Have a good suggestion for the remote? I have this small grey plastic box thats about the same size as the remote, and was thinking about putting it in there. It would go better than the case the remote is in now. Would love to hear everyones ideas on this :thumb:

G'day ScopeEDog!
I'm new to WizD and want to start catching up on some of the fine worklogs here... well, fancy choosing this one! What a great, innovative and unique case construction.
Although I like the videos, I really can't help wanting a few more pictures. That said though, you can't beat video for first hand instruction. I feel like I'm there looking over your shoulder. Well done. Milling is something that I've been interested in too and I'm pleased to witness some of the processes first hand. Very informative. ....oh, to have my own milling machine... the possibilities :magic:
I have some niggles about some of your design elements and engineering decisions, but there's no need to go into them, except maybe to say... er... over engineered. I'm not critising, just expressing one of the thoughts I had while watching the vids. I noticed that this sentiment was expressed already too, but in defence of you decisions, all the billet parts and engineered pieces are in keeping with the overall design--solid, all milled, billet construction. Sweet on the eyes.
I'm dissapointed to note that the log started back in 2004. This is not encouraging, but quite understandable. If only we could all mod all day and forget about work, eh?
Top notch work you're doing. I'm looking forward to further updates and hope you get a break to finish it off soon as now that I've seen it, I want to see it completed ;) (looks at own unfinished mod in disgrace) Undoubtedly this will be one of the many masterpieces of the modding community.
Cheers

Love the way those pumps nestle into the HD rack. Where were they going originally?
You should get a tripod though. I had to have a little chuckle at the wobbly bits where i assume you were operating the camera with one hand, and the manual crank on the mill with the other ;-)
The only comment i have on the production is, it might be nice to speed up the milling process on the vids rather than cutting them out entirely. I just feel it flows better, and we get to see the whole process in a few secs.
